     Introduction to Welding Program

Sparks Training Centre – Fall Night School

    September 30th – November 4th, 2026

    (Wednesday evenings 6:00 – 9:00 pm)

    Course Information and Objectives:
The Introduction to Welding Program is an entry‑level training course designed for individuals beginning their welding education and seeking a pathway into skilled‑trades training or future employment opportunities. Participants learn essential safety practices, foundational welding techniques and the core skills required to progress confidently into more advanced training.

This program serves as the first step in Sparks Training Centre’s welding training pathway, preparing committed learners for the Intermediate Welding Program (Spring program) and for those who continue to advance, the Specialized Summer Welding Program, where eligible participants may pursue Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) testing.

NOTE: Due to high demand and limited class size, priority is given to applicants who demonstrate a clear interest in welding as part of their future educational or employment goals. High school students are welcome to apply, however, applicants should be prepared to participate fully and demonstrate a genuine interest in welding as a future educational or employment direction. Preference will be given to high school students who are currently or previously enrolled in a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) or Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP), as these programs align directly with skilled‑trades career pathways.

    Learning Approach

    • Hands‑on, project‑based learning
    • Group demonstrations supported by individualized instruction
    • Progressive skill development at each participant’s pace
    • Introduction to Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) fundamentals

    What Participants Will Learn
Participants will develop foundational proficiency in SMAW (fillet/stick welding), including how to:

      • Safely turn on, set up and shut down welding equipment
      • Identify and use basic welding tools, including grinders and hand tools
      • Strike and maintain an arc using SMAW techniques
      • Complete basic welds and simple joints in flat and horizontal positions.
      • Understand welding terminology, equipment components and workshop best practices
      • Recognize common welding defects and learn basic corrective techniques

      Pathway Further Training
Participants who complete the Introduction to Welding Program will be prepared to:

      • Enroll in the Intermediate Welding Program (Spring program)
      • Continue developing SMAW skills toward more advanced joints and welding positions
      • Begin exploring the pathway toward CSA W47.1 fillet welding certification through future Sparks Training Centre programs

      Safety Requirements
Safety is mandatory in all Sparks Training Centre programs. Participants must:

      • Follow the instructor’s directions at all times
      • Use all required safety equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) supplied
      • Wear safety glasses (mandatory and supplied)
      • Wear closed‑toed shoes and long pants
      • Avoid loose or dangling clothing, hair, or jewelry
      • Maintain a clean and safe workspace throughout each session
